History of Rockland, Maine

Rockland was incorporated as a town in 1848 and later became a city in 1854, serving as the county seat of Knox County. Originally part of the larger town of East Thomaston, Rockland grew rapidly during the mid-1800s due to the booming lime industry. Massive deposits of limestone in the surrounding hills fueled dozens of kilns that produced lime for construction across the Eastern Seaboard, and the deep harbor allowed large schooners to transport the product efficiently.

By the late 19th century, Rockland had become one of the busiest ports in Maine, with shipbuilding, fishing, and granite quarrying adding to the economic mix alongside lime production. The city developed a vibrant downtown with grand commercial buildings, churches, and civic institutions reflecting its prosperity. The arrival of the railroad further boosted commerce and connected Rockland to markets throughout New England.

In the 20th and 21st centuries, Rockland reinvented itself as a cultural and culinary destination while maintaining its working waterfront. The Farnsworth Art Museum, home to a renowned collection of works by the Wyeth family and other American artists, anchors a thriving arts scene. The annual Maine Lobster Festival, launched in 1947, draws tens of thousands of visitors each August and solidified the city earning the title Lobster Capital of the World.
