History of Cushing, Maine

Cushing is a quiet coastal town in Knox County situated along the St. George River, first settled by Europeans in the early 1700s. The area was originally part of the larger Waldo Patent, a vast land grant that encompassed much of the midcoast region. Early settlers relied on fishing, farming, shipbuilding, and the harvesting of timber to sustain their families in this remote stretch of the Maine coast. The town was incorporated in 1789 and named after Thomas Cushing, the Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts at the time.

Throughout the 1800s, Cushing remained a modest rural community defined by its granite quarries, fishing wharves, and small family farms that dotted the rolling landscape. The town never developed into a bustling port like nearby Thomaston or Rockland, and that slower pace of life ultimately preserved much of its rural character. Lime production also contributed to the local economy, as kilns burned the plentiful limestone deposits found throughout Knox County.

Cushing gained international fame through the art of Andrew Wyeth, who spent decades painting the landscapes, people, and weathered buildings of the town. His 1948 painting Christina and the related work that became known worldwide brought lasting attention to the Olson House, a hilltop farmstead that is now a National Historic Landmark managed by the Farnsworth Art Museum. The connection to the Wyeth family continues to draw art lovers from around the world to this otherwise tranquil fishing and farming village.
