History of Ellsworth, Maine

Ellsworth serves as the county seat of Hancock County and has long been known as the Crossroads of Downeast Maine, situated at the junction of major routes leading to Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor, and the Blue Hill Peninsula. The area was first settled in the 1760s, and the town was incorporated in 1800, named after Oliver Ellsworth, the third Chief Justice of the United States. The Union River, which flows through the center of town, provided the waterpower that would drive the local economy for over a century.

During the 1800s, Ellsworth became one of the most important lumber centers in eastern Maine. Massive log drives sent timber down the Union River each spring, and dozens of sawmills lined the riverbanks. The lumber barons of Ellsworth built grand homes along Main Street, many of which still stand today as examples of Federal, Greek Revival, and Victorian architecture. Colonel John Black built his elegant Georgian mansion in 1824, and the Woodlawn estate remains one of the finest historic properties in the region.

As the lumber industry declined in the late 1800s, Ellsworth reinvented itself as a commercial hub and gateway community. The arrival of the railroad and later the automobile age cemented the role of the city as a service center for the surrounding region. Today Ellsworth is the primary shopping and services destination for thousands of residents across Hancock County, and millions of visitors pass through each year on their way to Acadia National Park and the coast.
