History of Freeport, Maine

Freeport is a town in Cumberland County that was originally part of North Yarmouth before being incorporated as a separate municipality in 1789. The area along the Harraseeket River and Casco Bay was home to the Abenaki people for centuries before European settlement began in the 1600s. Early industries included shipbuilding, fishing, and farming, and the town developed several distinct villages including South Freeport, a busy harbor community, and Freeport Village along the main road.

A pivotal moment in American history took place in Freeport when, according to local tradition, the documents that separated Maine from Massachusetts were signed at the Jameson Tavern in 1820, leading to Maine statehood. Freeport remained a typical New England town through the 1800s, with shoe factories, a thriving harbor, and agricultural land. The transformation of Freeport into a shopping destination began in 1912 when Leon Leonwood Bean founded L.L.Bean, initially selling his Maine Hunting Shoe from a small shop.

L.L.Bean grew into a global retail and catalog empire, and the flagship store in Freeport became famous for staying open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, a tradition that lasted until 2020. The success of L.L.Bean attracted dozens of other outlet stores and retailers to the town starting in the 1980s, transforming the village center into a major shopping destination that draws millions of visitors annually. Despite the commercialization, Freeport has preserved significant natural areas including Wolfe Neck Woods State Park and the Desert of Maine.
