History of Jefferson, Maine

Jefferson is a rural town in Lincoln County situated along the shores of Damariscotta Lake, one of the largest and deepest freshwater lakes in midcoast Maine. The area was first settled by Europeans in the mid-1700s, and the town was incorporated in 1807. It was named in honor of President Thomas Jefferson, who was serving his second term when the town was established. Early settlers found rich farmland in the lake basin and along the streams that feed into Damariscotta Lake.

Agriculture was the backbone of the Jefferson economy throughout the 1800s. Dairy farming, sheep raising, and crop cultivation sustained families across the rolling landscape. The town also had several small mills powered by the streams flowing out of the lake, processing lumber and grain for local use. Jefferson village developed as a modest center with a church, general store, and town hall, while scattered farmsteads spread across the surrounding hills.

Jefferson has remained a quiet agricultural and residential community into the present day, with Damariscotta Lake serving as an increasingly important recreational and environmental resource. The lake is renowned for its water quality and supports populations of landlocked salmon and other cold-water fish. Summer visitors and seasonal residents are drawn to the lakefront, while the year-round community of roughly 2,500 people maintains the rural traditions that have defined the town for over two centuries.
