History of Liberty, Maine

Liberty is a small town in Waldo County that was settled in the late 1700s by pioneers moving inland from the coast in search of affordable farmland. The town was incorporated on January 30, 1827, and given the patriotic name Liberty, reflecting the democratic ideals that were deeply felt in rural New England communities of that era. The village grew up around a mill site on a stream connecting several of the local ponds and lakes that dot the landscape.

Throughout the 1800s, Liberty was a self-sufficient farming community with the typical institutions of a small Maine town: churches, a schoolhouse, a general store, and various small mills. The surrounding hills provided timber, and the cleared land supported dairy cows, sheep, and mixed crops. Lake St. George, the largest body of water in the area, was an important resource for fishing and ice harvesting in the winter months.

In the modern era, Liberty has gained unexpected fame through Liberty Tool, a sprawling and eclectic used tool store that attracts visitors from across the country. The store, housed in several connected buildings in the village center, contains a vast and seemingly endless collection of hand tools, hardware, and curiosities spanning centuries. Lake St. George State Park, established on the shores of the pristine lake, has also brought visitors to the area for swimming, camping, and fishing. The year-round population remains small at roughly 900 residents.
