History of Belfast, Maine

Belfast, the county seat of Waldo County, was first settled in 1770 by Scotch-Irish immigrants from Londonderry, New Hampshire. The town was named after Belfast in Northern Ireland, reflecting the heritage of its founding families. Situated at the mouth of the Passagassawakeag River on Penobscot Bay, Belfast was incorporated in 1773 and quickly developed as a seaport and trading center for the surrounding agricultural region.

During the 19th century, Belfast prospered through a combination of shipbuilding, lumber, and maritime commerce. The waterfront bustled with schooners and coastal traders. In the 20th century, the economy shifted dramatically when Belfast became the center of a major poultry processing industry. Companies like Belfast Packing and later Penobscot Poultry made the city one of the largest chicken processing hubs in New England, employing hundreds of workers until the industry declined in the 1980s and 1990s.

Following the collapse of the poultry industry, Belfast reinvented itself as an arts and cultural destination. A wave of artists, craftspeople, and entrepreneurs revitalized the historic downtown, opening galleries, restaurants, and independent shops. The beautifully preserved 19th-century commercial buildings along Main Street and High Street now house a thriving creative community. Today Belfast is widely regarded as one of the most charming small towns on the Maine coast.
