History of Bath, Maine

Bath, known proudly as the City of Ships, has been synonymous with shipbuilding since its earliest days. Situated along the Kennebec River about 12 miles from the open ocean, the area was settled in the early 1660s and incorporated as a town in 1781. The deep, sheltered waters of the Kennebec provided an ideal environment for constructing vessels, and by the late 18th century Bath had emerged as one of the premier shipbuilding centers in the entire country.

The golden age of Bath shipbuilding came in the mid-19th century, when the city produced more sailing vessels per capita than any other community in America. Massive wooden schooners, clipper ships, and later steel vessels launched from the yards lining the riverfront. The founding of Bath Iron Works in 1884 by Thomas W. Hyde ensured that the shipbuilding tradition would carry into the modern era, transitioning from wooden sailing ships to steel-hulled naval destroyers.

Today Bath Iron Works remains one of the largest employers in Maine and a major contractor for the United States Navy, building guided-missile destroyers and other advanced warships. The Maine Maritime Museum, located on the former Percy and Small Shipyard, preserves the rich nautical heritage of the region. The historic downtown features well-preserved 19th-century architecture, and the city continues to celebrate its maritime identity through festivals and cultural events.
